Old Friends

Feeling nostalgic while waxing intellectual over my morning coffee...

What is it about talking to old friends that lifts your spirits? I called around last night after American Idol looking for a little confirmation. (Fantasia was SO flat on her last song and she didn't perform it anywhere near as well as the other girl. Now, I'm no fan of Diana, but I know flat when I hear it. And there those judges were... oohin' and gooin' and cooin' and gushin' and creamin' over how great she was when the simple fact of the matter was this--she was flat. FLAT, FLAT, FLAT, FLAT, FLAT.) So I was calling any and all parties of acquaintance who aren't tone deaf. We ended up talking to another couple on the speakerphone for an entire hour. They'd just celebrated their anniversary two days ago and we hadn't spoken is some time so there was much to tell.

Two days ago at the store, I ran into not one, but two interesting memories. The first was a girl who stood me up for a date. To be fair, her kid was in the hospital, but she could have called in the week that followed or sent an Email or something but she never did. The second was a girl I dated ever-so-briefly because on date number two, I was standing there in her living room when in walks her husband. Funny she never mentioned she had a husband so that was the end of that relationship.

But fortunately people from my past don't seem to recognize me at all. At least, that's the way they act and for the most part that's a great deal. While some old friends help to lift your spirits, still other items from our past aren't worth dredging-up. Since I in no way resemble what I did in HS and College, not too many folks will be looking beyond the goatee and the glasses and the shaved noggin to see the old me. If its somebody worth remembering--I'll remember them anyway and go up and say HI. Otherwise, it's just as well.

This does go so much faster than writing in a journal. I'm such the anti-artist.

Embrace technology!
